When Deep Cold Stops the Door Closing

  3. Pull the red release cord and lift the door by hand. If it is noticeably heavier than you remember, the hardware needs lubrication, not a new opener.
  4. Use garage door lubricant on roller stems, hinges and bearings before winter - not WD-40, which strips the grease you want to keep.

The autumn habit worth building

Ten minutes with a can of garage door lubricant before the first hard freeze prevents most of this, because it is the condition of the grease that decides how heavy the door feels in January. Common questions

Can I adjust the force settings myself?

There are adjustment screws or buttons on most openers, but set them too high and you disable the safety reversal that stops the door on an obstruction. That is a genuine hazard with children or pets around, which is why it is worth having done properly and tested.

Should I heat the garage?
